The University Occupational Safety and Health Committee conducted an online Occupational Safety and Health Training for DMMMSU employees on October 27-29, 2020 in the North La Union Campus including the Central Administration, SRDI, and NRTDI; the Mid La Union Campus; and the South La Union Campus, respectively. The training aimed to increase awareness of employees on occupational safety and health as mandated by CSC-DOH-DOLE Joint Memorandum Circular No. 1, series of 2020 or the Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Public Service.

Vice President for Administration Dr. Estrella N. Perez opened the online training during the first day on October 27 in NLUC. President Jaime I. Manuel, Jr. addressed participants in the Mid La Union Campus on October 28 to answer questions during the open forum. Chancellor Floribeth P. Cuison of the South La Union Campus actively participated in the open forum at SLUC on October 29.

Mr. Jiyger A. Pre, the University Safety and Health Officer; Mr. Napoleon Cayabyab, the University Chief Security Officer, and Mr. Randulph I. Navasca of the North La Union Campus, who are all certified safety officers, were the resource speakers during the online training. Mr. Jomar J. Lucena, the University Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer, anchored the program while the Central Administration’s MIS served as the online training host.    

The training included the following topics: introduction to occupational safety and health, accident causation theories, unsafe acts and unsafe conditions, accident prevention, hazards, basic safety rules and measures in the workplace, hazard identification risk assessment and control, workplace emergency preparedness. The OSH Standards for the public sector embodied in the CSC-DOH-DOLE Joint Memorandum No. 1, s. 2020 was also introduced and discussed to the participants.

An open forum ensued after the lecture by all the resource speakers. The training was recorded by the web host for future reference.

A total of 1472 employees participated in the training; 552 from NLUC including SRDI, and NRTDI, 467 from MLUC, and 453 from SLUC.

The training is a project of the newly-formed University Occupational Safety and Health Committee. With the successful conduct and positive feedback from the participants, the University OSH Committee hopes to undertake other relevant activities to promote and practice occupational safety and health in the University.
