June 16, 2021 – The training, Technology in Teaching Advanced Mathematics, Research, and Development of Instructional Materials, and Data Science, which started last June 7, 2021 at the different training venues of the three campuses of DMMMSU had its last session and closing program last Wednesday, June 16, 2021. The training which was conceptualized to upskill the mathematics teachers of the university ran for eight days with different sessions on Time Series Analysis, Geometric Construction, Useful Packages in LaTeX, Writing Research Manuscripts and Instructional Materials Using LaTex, Linear & Non-linear Differential Equations, Introduction to MATLAB, Solving mathematics problems and graphing using MATLAB, Linear Programming & Operations Research using Excel solver and QM for Windows, Selected Topics in Number Theory and Foundational Math, Data Science, and Research Publication.

Before the closing program, Prof. Sherelle Lou S. Icutan facilitated the last session wherein she discussed the latest trends in Mathematics Education Research and how to publish a research in refereed journals. Prof. Icutan is an alumnus of the University of the Philippines-Baguio and she is currently connected with Urdaneta City University.

Two participants from each of the three campuses shared their impressions during the closing program: Prof. Jennilyn L. Aban, Prof. Julie Ann Sapitula, Prof. Venus D. Siong, Prof. Luis A. Tattao, Prof. Melody R. Guzman, and Prof. Christopher M. Jimenez.

“I would have to admit that I am not that techy when it comes to technology but I always take the challenge of learning something new because we really have to update ourselves especially that we are now immersed in teaching through technology. The use of packages like TIKZ for Geometric Construction, use of Latex and Latex editor like Overleaf, use of Python, use of MATLAB updated us in module-making and in developing other instructional materials especially in generating documents full of mathematical symbols, graphs, and figures. I have also learned that these are useful in producing scientific and scholarly documents,” Prof. Melody R. Guzman shared in her impression.

Dr. Tjaart Jan B. Estrada thanked the speakers, the organizers, the facilitators, and the participants in his closing remarks. “Learning does not stop. That is what this [training] has just shown. As long as we are willing, and eager to learn something new, not even a Pandemic, and the challenges it poses, is enough to stop us from learning. Also, all the things that we learned here, are not only meant for us and our upgrading, but also for our students. To upgrade the teachers’ knowledge and skills, is also to upgrade the teaching learning process,” Dr. Estrada concluded. #
