Sixty faculty members from the colleges of the University offering ITE programs (BSCS, BSIT and BSIS) were trained on data science, and computer vision and natural language processing on June 9 to 11, 2021.

The first day was devoted on trends and methodologies in pattern recognition which included topics namely: implementation of machine learning algorithms using regression, classification, and clustering; practical tips for machine learning projects; and research trends in computer science.

On the second day, topics namely introduction to computer vision, software/hardware requirements, and dataset preparation were discussed. The learning service provider for 2 days was Prof. Julie Ann A Salido, a Professor in Aklan State University who serves as a consultant and is involved in research projects with the West Visayas Consortium for Industry and Energy Research Development.

The third day was allotted for training and workshop by Prof. Kristine Mae M. Adlaon of University of Immaculate Concepcion. Prof. Adlaon is a project leader of Project iWag: A Mobile-Web Bidirectional Neural Machine Translation System, a DOST-PCIEERD Research and Development funded project. She is an expert in the field of Natural Language Processing.

Computer vision and natural language processing are two of the most prominent branches of Artificial Intelligence. Computer vision helps makes predictions based on digital imagery and video inputs. Natural Language Processing on the other hand processes textual data which can be used for topic summarization, classification, translation, and analysis of the semantics of a give textual input.

Prof. Darwin C. Llavore, the Project Leader, believes that the training ignites the drive of the faculty members to engage in researches in the field of Data Science, Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing as well as in their day-to-day classes using spreadsheets, Matlab and Google Colaboratory.
