Fifty students of the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) who are aspiring to become entrepreneurs participated in the First Youth EntrePinoy Entrepreneurship Summit at the DMMMSU Open University System (DOUS) last November 29, December 2, 9, and 10, 2021.

DOUS partnered with the City Government of San Fernando through its Local Economic and Business Development Office and the Department of Trade and Industry Region 1 in conducting the said summit for DMMMSU students who attended on-site and online.

Spearheaded by Dr. Cristita Guerra, Executive Director of DOUS, and Dr. Meljo Apilado, Head of Student Affairs and Services, the summit was held to up-skill the participants and develop their entrepreneurial skills and attitude.  

Topics covered in the summit include the Youth Entrepreneurship Act or Republic Act 10679, Rationale and Opportunities in Developing Youth Enterprise, Contextualizing Youth Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurial Attitude, Training, Coaching and Mentoring Youth, Financial issues and Entrepreneurial Marketing, Developing Creative and Innovative Ideas for Young Entrepreneurs, Economic Analysis for Business Decision, and Business Planning. 

On the last day of the summit, the students were grouped and tasked to develop their own business plans in a workshop.  Their outputs were presented to a panel of judges who chose the best business plans for the group and individual categories.

For the group category, first place went to a group of DMMMSU Mid-La Union Campus (MLUC) students who presented their plan for their proposed ice cream shop called “Ice Dreams” (One shop, A World of Flavors). The group, who presented their plan in business attire, also bagged the Best Dressed award.

Meanwhile, second place went to another group of DMMMSU MLUC students who presented their plan for a cleaning service called “Cleanspace”. The group also won the Best Presentation award.  Further, third place went to a group of DOUS students who proposed a “leche flan” business called “Elyu Lechefanatics”.

For the individual category, first place went to Jo Ann Marie Ducusin, a DOUS Bachelor of Science in Business Administration student for her “Cakes and Sweets” business plan.  A special award, the Most Creative Entrepreneur, was given to a group of DOUS students for their business plan for a personalized rug tufting business called “ArtChic Carpet Wish”.

Aizel Christine Trapane, a DOUS student, received the Most Creative Entrepreneur award for her group’s business plan for “ArtChic Carpet Wish”, a personalized rug tufting business.

Resource speakers during the summit comprised of DMMMSU professors and representatives from the Department of Trade and Industry and the City Government of San Fernando, La Union.

The City Government of San Fernando guaranteed the aspiring entrepreneurs that despite the pandemic they will continue to guide and help them so they can fulfill their entrepreneurship goals and have a promising future ahead. (Ces Mabalot)
