For its second Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) this year, DMMMSU-SLUC College of Graduate Studies facilitated the MOOC Camp on “Using Educational Technology in the English Language Classroom”.  The extension project ran from May 15 to June 25, 2023, and concluded with 53 successful completers.

The initiative was facilitated by the affiliates of the said College, Dr. Melda M. Uychoco and Ms. Abelynn T. Llarenas. Alongside them was Mr. Joshua Justin Lee C. Bautista, a faculty member from the College of Education,  who served as a co-facilitator.   Professional teachers coming from the Department of Education, state universities, and private basic and higher education institutions in La Union, Pangasinan, Ilocos Sur, Ifugao, Isabela, Nueva Ecija, Quirino, including Filipinos teaching in Taiwan participated in the five-week online course.

Throughout the camp’s period, virtual sessions served as synchronous dissemination channels for tasks and lifeline for concerns. The integration, varieties, nuances, and affordances of different tools and software were tackled by 15 experts. They were distributed according to technology’s relevance and utilization in the cultivation of collaboration, communicative language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), literary engagement, grammatical competence, and vocabulary development in an English language classroom. In true outcomes-based fashion, the camp culminated in the presentation of technology-integrated lesson plans for various levels in the academe.

The successful participants have already garnered a badge and virtual certificate distributed through Canvas – the platform for this MOOC. Certificates from the U.S. Embassy in Manila will be awarded during the upcoming Celebration of Learning.

MOOC Camps are designed and designated under Project IELTS, further contributing to the Project S.T.E.P. extension program under the Master of Arts in Language Teaching (MALT) program’s facilitation. (By Joshua Justin C. Bautista)
