DMMMSU met with representatives from Vancouver Island University (VIU) at the Fairmont Hotel Makati on September 19, 2023 to explore potential areas of cooperation, share best practices, and enhance mutual understanding between the two universities.

The roundtable discussion was hosted by the VIU top officials Dr. Deborah Saucier, President & Vice-Chancellor; and Dr. Carolyn Russell, Associate Vice-President for International Education. From DMMMSU, the event was attended by Dr. Elsie M. Pacho, Vice President for Academic and International Affairs; Dr. Angelina T. Gonzales, Vice President for Research, Development and Innovation; Dr. Jesus Rafael B. Jarata, Director for International Affairs; and Dr. Andie John D. Tadeo, Executive Director for Fisheries Research and Training Institute.
During the meeting, both DMMMSU and VIU discussed the sustainable management of fisheries resources, an issue of paramount importance in the face of global environmental changes. The conversation also delved into the latest advancements in aquaculture techniques and technologies. They also shared their research findings and explored opportunities for the adoption of sustainable aquaculture practices that can meet the increasing global demand for seafood while minimizing environmental impacts.
One of the highlights of the event was the exploration of potential joint research projects, and student and faculty mobility programs. Both institutions recognized the potential for collaborative studies that could lead to breakthroughs in fisheries science, aquaculture innovation, and other disciplines such as management, social sciences and indigenous studies.
Cultural exchange and community engagement were also on the agenda. DMMMSU and VIU explored avenues to promote cultural understanding between their student populations and to engage in community service initiatives that could benefit both local and international communities.
As the discussion concluded, both universities agreed to work on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOA) to further explore the potential collaborations discussed during the roundtable.
Arranged by the Embassy of the Canada to the Philippines, the roundtable discussion between DMMMSU and VIU signifies a promising step towards a more interconnected and collaborative future for higher education, where institutions from different parts of the world can join forces to make a positive impact on the global stage.
