Students in DMMMSU can now enjoy more inclusive, gender-sensitive, anti-discriminatory rules on hairstyle and dress code.

The University Student Council, headed by their President and representative to the Board of Regents of DMMMSU,Hon. James Anthony T. Ocasion, reviewed and revised the policies in the University Student Handbook. Among the policies reviewed were on cross-dressing and hairstyle of the students.

The previous rule on school attire does not permit students to cross-dress. Whereas, the new policy does not explicitly promote or restrict cross-dressing but is more protective of students from harassment and exploitation.

Resolution No. 2024-889 provides that “on days when wearing the prescribed uniform is not enforced, wearing too revealing clothing items that excessively show skin such as cropped tops, tattered jeans, short shorts, miniskirts, and see-through clothing are not permitted. Any attire featuring offensive language, symbols, and images is not allowed.”

Meanwhile, previous policy on hairstyle restricts male students from sporting long hair. “Unconventional hair colors for males and females are not permitted. Hair should not touch the collar or neckline of the uniform. The use of cosmetics, hairpins, ponytails, headbands, etc. by males is not allowed.”

The newly approved policy maintains that “students’ hairstyles should be clean, combed, and neatly trimmed or fixed. Unconventional hair colors and hairstyles featuring offensive symbols or logos are prohibited. The excessive use of cosmetics and accessories is not allowed.”

In an interview with the University President,  Dr. Jaime I. Manuel, Jr. expressed support for the revised policies: “We should liberally interpret the policies according to the changing dynamics of social acceptance of seemingly unacceptable norms.”

These new policies encourage more comfortable and respectful learning environments for all genders. Taking it from the new policies, students can freely embrace their individuality and enjoy personal expression, yet in a respectable, dignified, non-offensive manner. (By Ayu)
