To promote sustainable agriculture and empower local farmers, eight experts from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University – National Apiculture Research Training and Development Institute (DMMMSU-NARTDI) lent their expertise as resource speakers during the three-day basic training on beekeeping, which was conducted at the Bacnotan Farmers’ Agri-Tourism Center, Baroro, Bacnotan, La Union from March 20 to 22, 2024.

The training was facilitated by the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist of the municipality of Bacnotan, La Union, headed by its Municipal Agriculture Officer, Dr. Divina Gracia G. Apigo.

Nine selected farmers from Bacnotan, La Union, and one staff of the LGU completed the training, which covered various aspects of beekeeping including bee biology, hive management, colony health, honeybee product processing, and the importance of bees in pollination and ecosystem.

The collaboration between NARTDI and the Local Government Unit of Bacnotan underscores the importance of knowledge sharing and capacity building in fostering resilient farming communities. By empowering farmers with the necessary skills and expertise, initiatives like basic beekeeping training contribute to the overall development of the agricultural sector and pave the way for sustainable livelihoods.
