The National Apiculture Research, Training, and Development Institute (NARTDI) recently mobilized a team to Barangay Catbangen in the City of San Fernando and Lacong, San Gabriel, in the province of La Union. The objective was to conduct a thorough site assessment to evaluate the suitability of these areas for beekeeping activities. This appraisal was initiated at the request of Mr. and Mrs. Jeremy D. Galvez in San Fernando City, and Mr. Reynante C. Ragpala in San Gabriel, both local residents eager to venture into beekeeping.

Armed with their commitment, the NARTDI team led by Mr. Macdonald Acosta, head of the Demonstration apiary of NARTDI, examined the area, analyzing various factors that could influence the success of beekeeping endeavors in Barangay Catbangen and Lacong. They scrutinized every aspect of the area, from floral diversity to water sources, to ensure a holistic assessment.

As the site appraisal concluded, preliminary findings indicated promising conditions for beekeeping in the two areas. According to Mr. Acosta, the sites are suitable to put up a beekeeping project; however, further observation should be employed from the start of their beekeeping operation to determine the viability of the areas.

Looking ahead, Mr. and Mrs. Galvez, and Mr. Ragpala are optimistic about the potential of beekeeping and eager to start their beekeeping activity.

Amidst the growing interest in beekeeping within communities, NARTDI is steadfast in its commitment to providing assistance to those in need. (By Arvin C. Tuyan)
