To ensure the efficacy and sustainability of community projects, the University Extension Office of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU), led by Extension Director Prof. Emerita D. Galiste, visited the beekeepers in the Municipality of Paracelis and Sagada, Mountain Province on April 25-26, 2024 for monitoring and evaluation.

Among the sites they visited were the apiary of the Mababbalin Farmers Association in Bunot, Paracelis, and that of Mr. Jason O. Cam-ed at the Sagada Heritage Village in Sagada, both in Mountain Province.

The monitoring and evaluation process involved gathering qualitative and quantitative information, including the number of colonies, honey production, and issues concerning beekeeping. From the health and productivity of the colonies/apiaries to engaging with the beekeepers, Director Emerita D. Galiste and her team left no stone unturned in their monitoring and evaluation work.

Speaking on the importance of such initiatives, Director Galiste emphasized, “Community-based projects like beekeeping not only contribute to economic growth but also promote environmental conservation and eco-tourism. Our role is to initiate these endeavors and ensure their sustained growth and positive impact on local livelihoods.”

Likewise, Prof. Rodolfo Nillo mentioned that the collaboration between the beekeepers and DMMMSU-NARTDI must be strengthened for the sustainability of the projects. “NARTDI and the beekeepers must practice the exchange of newfound knowledge and technologies to further enhance their existing beekeeping practices,” he said.

The monitoring team witnessed the beekeepers’ remarkable proficiency as evidenced by their colonies’ good health. (By Arvin C. Tuyan)
