College of Computer Science (CCS) student researchers achieved a remarkable sweep of the top three spots for Best Research Paper during the 4th National Conference on Computing, Education, and Business (NCCEB 2024) held at the La Union Convention Center, San Fernando City, La Union on May 28, 2024.
Themed “Navigating Digital Transformation in the Era of 5.0: Integrating Computing Education and Business Innovations,” the conference brought together researchers, industry leaders, and students to explore the ever-changing digital landscape.
CCS research paper “Fish-Scan: A Mobile Application to Identify Ladyfish Fingerlings” by Willy Boy S. Lachica, Lee Jelyn A. Balangue (presenter), Mark T. Calera, Jessa Mea V. Gali, and Renz Michael D. Ventura, under the advisership of Prof. Charlie S. Marzan, secured the Best Research Paper Award in the IT/CS Track. The Fish-Scan is a mobile application designed to detect ladyfish using object detection. The application employs the YOLOv8 architecture for real-time object detection and good accuracy.
Moreover, Balangue’s clear and compelling presentation during the conference further solidified their victory, earning her the Best Presenter award.
The conference was not just about a single win. Other CCS student researchers presented their innovative projects:
- “BantayKape: Coffee Crop Pest Detection and Management App” by Ralph Matthew R. Aquino, Julia E.Baybay (presenter), Melanie V. Laroya, Edelyn C. Ortiz, and Mikee O. Secretaria, guided by Prof. Charlie S.Marzan (2nd Place)
- “Signature Authentication and Forgery Detection: A Deep Learning Approach” by Jahzeel M. Revilloza (presenter), Alessa Mae J. Guieb, Angel Lhyn B. Machado, Jastine R. Mallare, Leanz Jenevie F. Manongdo, and KC V. Villanueva, guided by Prof. Joe Anthony M. Milan (3rd Place)
- “MenuFlix: Development of a Customizable Ordering and Delivery System Using a Progressive Framework”by Jordan G. Marcelo, Sheney O. Balanza, Ferdinand A. Esteves (presenter), Kathlenn W. Marzo, and Angeline L. Viloria, under the guidance of Prof. Charlie S. Marzan
- “Web Based Filipino Sign Language Gesture Recognition Using Recurrent Neural Network” by Francis A.Balanag (presenter), Rechel D. Bellen, Christopher T. Castro, Leslie Abby M. Garcia, Danica M. Pagaragan, and Edmar A. Panelo, under the advisership of Prof. Belinda D. Celestial
This impressive feat by CCS students is a testament to DMMMSU’s and the College’s commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and research. Their innovative projects have the potential to make an inspiration to aspiring IT students and professionals nationwide.
