Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University – Open University System (DOUS) welcomed officials from the University of the Cordilleras (UC) for a benchmarking activity on establishing and operating an Open University on March 7, 2025. The visit provided UC with insights into DOUS’s best practices in open and flexible learning as it prepares to launch its distance education program.
Dr. Bernardo D. Lamadrid, DOUS Executive Director, received the UC delegation and shared the University’s journey since its establishment in 1996. He discussed key policies and guidelines for setting up an Open University and highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in enhancing digital education and student engagement.
Prof. Claudia Denise P. Barbadillo, DOUS Guidance Counselor, presented the University’s program offerings, learning modalities, and student services, emphasizing DOUS’s commitment to providing accessible education for diverse learners, including working professionals and students in remote areas. Dr. Jayson O. Madayag facilitated discussions between DOUS and UC representatives.
The UC delegation included Dr. Ariel Nimo B. Pumecha, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research; Dr. Jeffrey S. Ingosan, Dean of the College of Information Technology and Computer Science; Dr. Ramir S. Austria, Dean of the College of Teacher Education; and Engr. Dionisio R. Tandingan, Director of the Institute of Teaching and Learning. Key DOUS officials also participated, including Dr. Luzviminda Salamanca, Dr. Cristita G. Guerra, Mr. Christopher Kyle Lana, Engr. Mars Rivera, Dr. Brillo S. Paje, and Prof. Priscilla S. Abellera.The exchange of knowledge reinforced DOUS’s commitment to academic collaboration and its role as a leader in open and distance learning.
