Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), Canada’s first publicly funded Polytechnic Institute, visited DMMMSU last March 14, 2025, to explore a potential partnership, focusing on microcredential offerings through the DMMMSU Open University System (DMMMSU-OUS).

Representing SAIT was Mr. Kev Alay-ay, Country Manager (Philippines), who met with Dr. Bernardo D. Lamadrid, DMMMSU-OUS Executive Director; Dr. Jesus Rafael B. Jarata, University Director for International Affairs; and Dr. Lher Ver Palabay, University Director for Alumni Affairs to discuss collaborative opportunities.

The meeting highlighted SAIT’s commitment to providing international credentials and career pathways for Filipino students and alumni. With SAIT ranked among Canada’s top five institutions for applied research, Alay-ay emphasized its industry-aligned, practical learning approach, which could complement DMMMSU’s academic programs.

The discussion focused on several key areas, including the potential introduction of micro-credential programs to equip DMMMSU students with globally competitive skills. Opportunities for study, work, and living in Canada were also explored, aiming to provide pathways for DMMMSU graduates and alumni to gain international experience. Additionally, SAIT expressed interest in actively participating in DMMMSU’s career and education fairs, offering insights into Canadian education and career prospects. The meeting also covered potential collaborations under Republic Act 11448, which promotes transnational higher education and internationalization efforts in Philippine universities.
DMMMSU has already established its presence in Canada through various activities with its partner institutions, the University of Saskatchewan (USask) and the University of Regina (UofR). This year, the University is also exploring the potential signing of an MOU with Portage College, further strengthening its international collaborations. (By Jesus Rafael B. Jarata)
