The Sericulture Research and Development Institute of DMMMSU (DMMMSU-SRDI) celebrated the second day of its 33rd Foundation Anniversary with an Awards and Recognition Program at the Ortega Memorial Center on April 30, 2025.

With the theme “Weaving the Threads of Progress: Celebrating Tradition, Crafting Our Future,” the event brought together SRDI employees, sericulture farmers, and weavers to honor outstanding contributions to the sericulture industry.

Dr. Minerva J. Tabafunda, SRDI Chief Administrative Officer, opened the program by emphasizing the value of recognizing those who have significantly advanced the Institute’s goals. A key highlight was the launch of three updated Technology Guides—on sapling sustainability, mulberry production, and silkworm rearing—led by Dr. Mabel C. Caccam, Head for Research & Extension Publication and IEC Material.

Mr. Calixto Galano, one of SRDI’s top cocoon producers, delivered a testimonial on the benefits of sericulture, encouraging wider participation in the industry. The event also featured an acoustic poetry performance by SRDI researcher Jay Ron A. Masanit, celebrating the Institute’s milestones and aspirations.

SRDI Executive Director Dr. Cristeta F. Gapuz delivered a comprehensive Director’s Report titled “SRDI Through the Years: Legacy, Impact, and the Way Forward,” detailing the Institute’s historical development, ongoing innovations, and partnerships, including a P50-million weaving center and collaborations with 11 state universities and colleges. Dr. Gapuz concluded with a powerful message that captures SRDI’s enduring commitment: “Let us continue weaving a legacy of excellence, empowerment, and innovation—one silk thread at a time.”

Awards were presented to outstanding employees, support staff, and sericulture practitioners, including Silkworm Rearer, Moriculturist, and Silk Processor of the Year, as well as top cocoon producers and silk weavers. Individuals recognized for achievements in research, standards development, and sports were also honored, along with past SRDI administrators.

In her closing remarks, Ms. Evangel E. Barrameda expressed gratitude to all contributors to SRDI’s continued success, stating, “Our award serves as a manifestation of the hard work and sacrifices for our beloved SRDI.”
