Students from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) dominated the first-ever Dinengdeng Festival Idol, a lively musical competition celebrating Ilocano culture and talents in the Municipality of Agoo, La Union, held on May 1, 2025.
After a series of elimination rounds conducted weeks before the grand finals, among the 300 aspirants from various barangays and educational institutions, the field was narrowed to 30 semifinalists, later whittled down to 10 grand finalists for the vocal solo, 6 pairs from the duet category, and 3 from the Kundiman category, whose impressive performances captivated audiences and jurors alike. Many of the standout performers hailed from DMMMSU.
Students from DMMMSU emerged victorious across several categories. In the OPM Solo category, Shiela Mae Sotto, a senior Bachelor of Science in Filipino student, claimed the top prize. Christian Dale Bernardez, a freshman enrolled in the Bachelor of Culture and Arts Education (BCAEd) program, secured second place, while incoming BCAEd freshman Bonifacio Ofiana placed third.
In the Kundiman category, only one winner was declared—April Ann Pili, a BCAEd sophomore. She enchanted judges and spectators with her heartfelt rendition of “Malungkot ang Maya,” exhibiting powerful vocal control and artistic finesse.
Meanwhile, the Duet category saw a strong showing from DMMMSU Laboratory High School (LHS) students. Luke Gabriel Aloot and Jahziel Martiene A. Ventura earned First Runner-Up, delivering a harmonious performance of the OPM song “Pusong Ligaw.” Aicelle Alonzo and Dyann Thiamae Mabalot, also from LHS, secured Second Runner-Up with their duet on “Tatsulok.” Irene Grace Libayan, their coach, shared her pride, emphasizing that the wins reflect the students’ sincere representation of their university and community.
