In his nearly two-hour inspirational message, President Manuel shared the compelling story behind the birth of the College of Medicine (COMed) during the opening program at the COMed lobby on July 1, 2025. Far from being a simple recounting, his speech was a powerful narrative of perseverance, vision, and leadership.
President Manuel candidly spoke of the many challenges he faced and the countless setbacks that marked the early days of building the college from the ground up. He walked the audience through the painstaking process of conceptualizing, drafting project proposals through the University Planning Office. President Manuel also highlighted the critical support he received, how he garnered the backing of Senator Joel Villanueva, and how Congressman Dante played a critical role in authoring the bill that formally established the College of Medicine.
Throughout his speech, he graciously and repeatedly acknowledged the individuals who worked hard to turn the vision into reality. Among them were Dr. Fauslyn Amongan and Dr. Charlotte Mildred Marceline Asuncion Padaoan. He personally invited Dr. Elsie M. Pacho, former VP for Academic and International Affairs, whose help he also highlighted.
“No one builds a dream alone. This College stands on the strength of visionaries and volunteers, lawmakers and leaders, planners and partners, and above all, a community that never stopped believing in the power of education to heal, to transform, and to serve,” he said.
With both passion and conviction, he challenged the inaugural students to aim for a 100% passing rate after graduation, not just as a measure of excellence, but as a safeguard for the very survival of the College.
Despite the length of his message, President Manuel infused it with wit and humor, effortlessly holding the audience’s attention. He delivered a masterclass in storytelling, captivating his audience with humor, heart, and vision, and leaving them inspired, amused, and deeply moved by the legacy he continues to build.
The Opening Ceremony was attended by the University Executive Officials, COMed administrators, faculty members and students, Campus Officials, and teaching and nonteaching personnel.
