Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU), through its Innovation and Technology Commercialization Office (ITCO), held a two-day Patent Drafting and Prior Art Search Writeshop at the NLUC Administrative Building Conference Room on June 25-26, 2025. The activity aimed to enhance the intellectual property (IP) competencies of the University researchers.

Spearheaded by ITCO Director Prof. Victoria N. Malaya, the activity was formally opened by NLUC Chancellor Dr. Junifer Rey E. Tabafunda, with NLUC ITCO Head Dr. Jo-anne D. Villar introducing participants and outlining the writeshop’s objectives. A video message from Dr. Angelina T. Gonzales, Vice President for University Research, Development, and Innovation (URDI), emphasized the University’s commitment to innovation and IP protection.

Dr. Villar also presented updates on DMMMSU’s current IP portfolio. Technical sessions followed, led by Engr. Edwin F. Rimas, Mid La Union Campus ITCO Head, discussed the IP ecosystem and patent fundamentals. Engr. Rhodora S. Mortela of RAISE-IPTBM provided in-depth training on prior art search strategies, patent drafting, and copyright writing. Engr. Rimas also led sessions on writing utility models, industrial designs, and a hands-on prior art search using WIPO, Google Patents, and Patent Scope.

Participants engaged in hands-on sessions in the drafting of a patent application and presentation of patent applications on the second day. The activity concluded with the awarding of certificates and closing remarks from Dr. Villar. (By Rochelle M. Verganio)
