The College of Agriculture (CA) of DMMMSU-NLUC and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Bacnotan, La Union conducted a two-day training on oyster mushroom production at the Boardroom of the Admin Building DMMMSU NLUC, Sapilang, Bacnotan, La Union on August 6-7, 2024.

This training was designed to empower local farmers with an alternative, income-generating agricultural venture and to equip the participants with the necessary knowledge to cultivate oyster mushrooms.

The training delved into various aspects of oyster mushroom cultivation, starting with mushroom growth and development fundamentals. Participants gained a deep understanding of mushrooms’ basic characteristics, learned the essentials of cultivating them for beginners, and explored the nuances of proper care and management to ensure optimal growth and yield. The training also addressed potential challenges and common issues associated with mushroom cultivation, providing practical recommendations and solutions.

The training was not just theoretical but also practical. The hands-on experience provided to participants was a highlight, focusing on crucial steps like preparing high-quality spawn. Participants also had the chance to visit the CJ’s Farm to further enhance the practical application of the training. They had an opportunity to observe real-world oyster mushroom cultivation practices on a larger scale.

The training concluded with a closing ceremony, during which participants received certificates of completion as recognition for their successful completion. This initiative embodies the university’s strong commitment to community empowerment through agricultural innovation and sustainable development. By equipping local farmers with the expertise to cultivate oyster mushrooms, it would significantly boost the community’s economic well-being and promote self-sufficiency. (By KAER)
