Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) emerged as a strong contender during the Philippine Consortium for Science, Mathematics, and Technology (PCSMT) 2025 Science and Math Quiz Bowl, held at the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) Gymnasium from April 2 to 4, 2025.  

With the theme “Innovation in Action: Shaping Tomorrow with Science, Mathematics and Technology,” the three-day event gathered 25 State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) out of 45 member institutions nationwide.

DMMMSU’s delegation, composed of eight quiz bowl contestants and four coaches, secured the top prize in the Biology category. DMMMSU contenders also placed 9th in Physics, 10th in Chemistry, and 12th in Mathematics, landing an overall 7th-place finish among the 25 competing SUCs.

Representing DMMMSU in the Biology category were John Michael A. Tamayo and Frederick J. Abanes, under the guidance of Mr. John Raymund Torres. In the Physics category, John Lenard Fortes and Mylene Estrecho Isla competed with coaching support from Mr. Brian Adams Bugarin. Chemistry quizzers Alexis Aron Bueno and Gwyneth Ramos were mentored by Mr. Stephen V. Villaruz, while Mathematics was represented by Merrick Josh C. Baisac and Louis Paolo P. Vicente, coached by Prof. Luis A. Tattao.

The team was led by Dr. Vicky A. Agpasa, Vice President for Academic Affairs, as the official representative of University President Dr. Jaime I. Manuel Jr. Also present were PCSMT Coordinators Prof. Laiza A. Niduaza and Dr. Venus D. Siong, who served as TWG members and facilitators during the event.

Dr. Manuel was elected as Business Manager of PCSMT for fiscal years 2025 to 2027 during the officer election held on April 3 at Tadina Hall. Dr. Agpasa took the oath on his behalf during the closing ceremonies on April 4.

DMMMSU’s quiz bowl participants included students from its Mid-La Union and South La Union campuses, guided by faculty coaches in each discipline. The Biology team, composed of John Michael A. Tamayo and Frederick J. Abanes from SLUC, delivered the university’s strongest performance.

The event concluded with a turnover ceremony and the awarding of medals and certificates to outstanding participants. (By Ayu)
