The National Apiculture Research, Training and Development Institute (NARTDI) of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) underscored its leadership in sustainable beekeeping and agricultural innovation during a special learning visit by participants of ProPrime Travels’ Ultimate La Union Tour on June 4, 2025.
Approximately 40 guests from the National Capital Region visited DMMMSU-NARTDI’s facility as part of a curated tour of La Union’s key agricultural and ecotourism sites. The visit aimed to provide participants with firsthand insights into the role of apiculture in enhancing agricultural productivity, supporting biodiversity, and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
The delegation was welcomed by NARTDI’s team of experts, who conducted a guided tour of the Institute’s apiary and honey production facilities. Mr. Arvin C. Tuyan, Head of NARTDI’s Extension Division, delivered an in-depth briefing on the ecological and agricultural significance of honeybees. He explained how effective pollination by bees contributes to improved crop yields and ecosystem stability.
Complementing this, Mr. David T. De Castro, Head of Innovation and Technology Commercialization, R&E Publication and IEC Materials Development, provided a comprehensive overview of modern honey production techniques. His presentation covered the entire process — from honeycomb collection and precision extraction to advanced filtration, quality control, and strategic packaging and marketing. He also highlighted best practices in maintaining product integrity and ensuring the long-term sustainability of apiculture enterprises.(By Jasmin O. Agdippa)
