Anie Sophia P. Garlejo, Bachelor of Secondary Education II student, triumphed as she was proclaimed the champion in the spoken word poetry competition by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED)- Regional Office 1 on its culminating activity of the Regional ASEAN Month Celebration on August 31, 2021.

Besting 15 other contenders all over the region, Garlejo delivered her winning entry, “Sampung Tala, Magkakaagapay: USWAG ASEAN”, which revolves around the unity and light shone by the ten Southeast Asian countries despite the odds faced by their citizens. It was anchored in the “We Care, We Prepare, We Prosper” theme.

Spoken word entries were judged based on content (40 points), delivery (40 points), and virtual impact (20 points). Her spoken word video posted on the CHEDRO-1 Facebook page garnered more than 14,000 views and 3.4k reactions, as of this posting.

Meanwhile, Jericho Jay Q. Abacco, Bachelor of Arts in Communication IV student, took home the third place in the extemporaneous speech contest held via Zoom last August 26. Abacco’s three-minute extempo speech focused on the given topic, “From Roots to routes: Education as a Game Changer in the 21st Century”.

With the theme “PADYAK: Moving Forward, Claiming Victory for Philippine Higher Education in the ASEAN Community”, CHEDRO-1’s Regional ASEAN Month Celebration hosted two other virtual academic competitions such as the online canvas painting, and online chorale competition.

Mac Froilan C. Cabalon’s, Bachelor of Culture and the Arts Education IV student, entry for the online canvas painting drew more than 1,300 reactions and 192 shares.

Garlejo was coached by Ms. Mary Jane Cabilitazan and Ms. Marnielyn Cavinta, who also co-wrote the piece. Abacco was mentored by Dr. Jesus Rafael B. Jarata; while Cabalon was guided by Mr. Marvin Tandas.
